The Bangalore Chapter of The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has put out a free walking-tour app of the city’s heritage sites.

The app is available for both iOS (iPhone, iPod touch and iPad) and Android mobile phones.

We downloaded the app for our iPhone a short while ago.

Available in both English and Kannada, the app covers the area around Tippu’s Fort, not far from K.R.Market in Bangalore.

Besides text and pictures, the app also has audio commentary in both English and Kannada for a few sites.

While not the greatest of designs, the app could be of some use to tourists in Bangalore.

The INTACH Bangalore app was developed in partnership with Bangalore-based IT firm Sonata Software.

Free WiFi Coming to Heathrow Airport

Finally, nickeled and dimed travelers have something to smile about.

Heathrow Airport will launch free WiFi in early June.

The London airport will offer travelers 45-minutes of free Internet access per day across its five terminals.

If you hold a Heathrow Rewards card, your free Internet time doubles to 90 minutes.

Travelers looking for longer periods of access can pick from a range of pay-as-you-go options.

Having gotten used to continuous Internet access at work and home, travelers can quickly become disoriented in the absence of free WiFi.

But Internet access is seldom free at airports or in flight and are often expensive.

Germans and Americans are Dumbest Travelers

A new survey on tipping has shown that Germans and Americans are dumber than Italians, French, Spanish and the Brits.

Why?

Because Germans and Americans are more likely to leave a tip while traveling.

The survey by TripAdvisor found that 69% of Germans and 57% of Americans always leave a tip while they’re on a trip.

Here’s nations from a bunch of countries tip when they’re on a trip.

1. Germans – 69%
2. Americans – 57%
3. Russians – 53%
4. Brazilians – 40%
5. French – 39%
6. Brits – 39%
7. Spanish – 36%
8. Italians – 23%

Americans are the worst when it comes to tipping during vacations.

The survey found 99% of Americans tip on vacation compared to the average of 43% who always tip among seven other countries.

In our view, tipping is a lousy trick played by businesses to pass on the cost of paying their employees to customers.

The TripAdvisor survey did not cover Indians, who are smart enough to seldom tip.

Kingfisher Airlines May Start Limited Operations Soon

Liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s troubled Kingfisher Airlines may restart its operations soon, albeit in a limited manner.

The cash-strapped airline has faced a slew of problems in recent months including a strike by workers over non-payment of wages.

Although the strike has been withdrawn, the airline has yet to take to the skies after it was grounded by Indian authorities in October.

Mallya met a group of Kingfisher’s creditors in Mumbai recently to discuss the viability of the airline and resumption of services.

Kingfisher’s debt is estimated at $2.5 billion, a lot of it owed to Indian banks.

“The airline is in talks with DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) for a limited restart of its operation,” said Shyamal Acharya, Deputy Managing Director of State Bank of India, one of Kingfisher’s creditors.

Mallya is infusing Rs 425 crore ($77.91 million) into the airline to restart its operations.

Meanwhile, media reports suggest that Gulf carrier Etihad Airways is considering an equity investment in either Kingfisher or Jet Airways.

Air India’s striking pilots have ended their 58-day-old strike and are returning to work.

The pilots said in a statement, “We, the pilots of Air India and members of Indian Pilots Guild, on the intervention of the Delhi High Court, have started the procedure to resume work.”

Air India’s management told the Delhi High Court it would sympathetically look into pilots’ grievances including reinstatement of 101 fired pilots.
