Budget airline Southwest has commenced flights from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) with eight flights initially.

The new service offers six daily nonstop flights to Chicago Midway and two daily nonstop flights to St. Louis.

Beginning June 5, 2011, Southwest plans to expand the service with three daily nonstops to Baltimore/Washington, three daily nonstops to Denver, two daily nonstops from Houston Hobby, and two daily nonstops to Phoenix Sky Harbor.

Southwest Airlines’ new service to Newark Liberty International Airport is said to offer direct or connecting service to over 45 destinations including: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Dallas, and San Diego.

The move into Newark is an expansion for Southwest in the New York metro area where it already operates from LaGuardia and Long Island.
